Alexis Smith, the Founder and contributor of, Be A Maven, asked me to photograph raw images for the launch of her new website. I believe I screamed, YES, as this is an incredible piece to be part of.
Be A Maven is an online platform to share your darkest moments, your greatest triumphs, and everything in between. It's a space for people to share their story, begin to heal, and inspire others to grow with them. Alexis dances with Cystic Fibrosis and mental illness everyday and seeks to bring light to the good and bad emotions that come with.
My main objective was to convey truth. I wanted the viewer to feel the emotion someone with a terminal or mental illness would feel: chaos, depression, loneliness, and pain. To bare the vulnerability, strength, and courage it takes to keep your head up and fight every single day.
As an advocate for Cystic Fibrosis, Alexis wanted to focus on the port in her chest to show the physical changes the illness can cause, but that it does not define who she is, her femininity or fierceness.
